Missing teeth can leave you feeling awkward and embarrassed in social situations. You may be reluctant to smile in photos, and you might place your hand over your mouth whenever you speak. You don’t have to live like that forever. Dental implants can give your smile a new lease on life.
Dental Implants in Worcester
Some tooth loss happens accidentally. Other times, teeth are professionally extracted. Either way, you’ll be left with a gap in your mouth and no tooth root.
A dental implant takes the place of the missing root. It’s a titanium metal post that functions as a prosthetic.
Dr Tony Tong at Union Dental can insert a dental implant and affix it to your jawbone. Over time, the bone and the metal will fuse together so that your implants will be strong and secure for many years to come. They'll provide a reliable foundation to hold artificial teeth in place.
Different patients choose different types of replacement teeth to go with their dental implants.
Some of our Worcester patients opt for implant crowns. These artificial teeth are affixed permanently to the implant posts with cement or screws. Since crowns stay in your mouth all the time, you can brush and floss them just like you would your natural teeth.
Others choose overdentures, which are also known as implant dentures. They’re similar to traditional dentures in that you can take them in and out. Unlike regular dentures, though, overdentures snap onto your implant posts. That holds them firmly in place throughout the day.
One of the top reasons to get dental implants is so that you’ll have full rows of teeth again. Every day, you’ll smile with pride as you show off your beautiful teeth.
Our dental team does an excellent job of making your implants look natural. We carefully select the shade of your crowns or implant dentures to match your surrounding teeth. Since the teeth are firmly held in place with snaps, cement or screws, they won’t wiggle or shift as you talk to people.
You can keep up a normal diet with dental implants. The titanium posts are secure and durable, so there’s no need to avoid your favorite foods.
Caring for dental implants is similar to taking care of your natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing will go a long way toward keeping your new teeth in good shape. If you have overdentures, you can take them out for cleaning.
Dental implants can actually improve your oral health. When teeth are missing, the jawbone in that area deteriorates. The more bone loss you have, the more likely it is that other teeth will start to fall out. Since implants are prosthetic roots, they can stop this jawbone loss from happening. For that reason, it’s best to have implants put in as soon as possible.
Dental implants aren’t the only option we have for missing or damaged teeth. At Union Dental, we offer an array of services to meet each patient’s needs. Dr. Tong can discuss the options with you.
Perhaps your teeth are still strong, but you have cosmetic concerns. Dental veneers might be a better option. Veneers are thin porcelain covers that affix to the front of your teeth.
Crowns aren’t only for people with implants. Our Worcester team can also place a crown over a natural tooth. We often do this after root canals or when a patient has suffered impact damage.
If you’re missing just one tooth, we might suggest a dental bridge. We’ll place a crown over the teeth on either side of the gap. The crowns will support a replacement tooth to fill in the open space.
In our dental practice, we also provide traditional dentures. Both partial and full sets are available. Dentures may be the best option if you’ve experienced a good deal of bone loss.
