Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. When your teeth aren’t in good shape, your confidence can take a hit. You may be reluctant to smile in photos or introduce yourself to new people.
Instead of hiding your teeth, talk to Dr. Tony Tong about tooth repair. At Union Dental in Worcester, you can have dental veneers put on your teeth. Veneers could give your original teeth a whole new look.
About Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are thin pieces of durable porcelain or composite resin. They’re made in the same shade as your natural teeth and shaped to fit perfectly over the top of your damaged teeth.
The dentist permanently bonds your veneers over the front surface of your teeth. You can use them just like you do your natural teeth, but they’ll look much better.
Veneers are designed to look exactly like real teeth. You’ll know that your teeth have a cover on them. Your dentist will know too, of course. Others, though, may be none the wiser. They’ll just see your attractive smile.
Many patients can benefit from dental veneer treatment. This cosmetic procedure can fix issues like:
In some cases, dentists also apply veneers for people with weak or damaged enamel.
For dental veneers to work for you, your teeth must meet certain criteria. They must be strong and generally healthy. If your roots are weak or your gums aren’t in good shape, then you might be a better candidate for a different treatment, such as dental implants.
It’s also best if you don’t have a habit of clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth. Doing those things could damage your veneers. However, wearing a mouthguard at night may be an option.

After discussing veneers with Dr. Tong, you may be ready to get started on your treatment.
First, the dentist will remove some of your tooth enamel to create space for the veneer. Next, an impression of your teeth will be taken so that your veneers will fit just right.
Depending on the type of dental veneers you get — composite resin or porcelain — you may receive them the same day or in a few weeks. If you have to wait, you may receive temporary veneers.
When it’s time to put on the new veneers, the dentist will use a grinding tool to make the tooth's surface a bit rougher. That helps to create a stronger bond between the veneer and the tooth. Then, a special bonding adhesive will affix the veneer in place. The dentist can speed up the drying process with a curing light.
After placing the veneer, the dentist may polish it or make small adjustments to your bite. Those final touches will help the tooth look and feel just right.
Dental Veneers can last for many years. Composite resin veneers have a lifespan of up to seven years. Porcelain ones often stay in good shape for 10 to 20 years.
The more diligently you care for your veneers, the longer they’ll last, so be careful how you use your teeth. For example, use scissors instead of your teeth to open packages. Avoid chomping on ice or biting your fingernails. When possible, use your back teeth to chew your food.
Protect your veneers whenever you can. Put in a mouthguard before playing sports. Use one at night too if you tend to grind your teeth.
Of course, it’s always a good idea to keep up with your regular oral care. Brush and floss your teeth every day. Use a gentle, nonabrasive toothpaste that contains fluoride. See the dentist for frequent checkups and cleanings too.
